“I’m not photogenic.” “I never know what to do with my face.” “You’re going to have your work cut out for you!”
If any of these sound familiar, you are exactly the person I love photographing. You do not need to arrive at your headshot session feeling confident or knowing your best angle. I’ll help you with that!
At my Calgary headshot sessions, I guide you through posing and expressions so you have something to focus on besides wondering whether you look awkward. We can take the pressure off before I even pick up the camera.
You do not need to practice being a model – crazy, I know!
There is a lot happening in a good portrait: lighting, camera angle, posture, expression, and how comfortable you feel with the person photographing you. That is a lot to put on yourself when your actual job has nothing to do with photography.
I’ve been photographing people since 2008, and helping someone feel comfortable is a huge part of what I do. I’ll show you where to turn, what to do with your shoulders, and how to adjust your chin. If your hands are in the photo, they get instructions too. We will give them a job. 🙂
You can leave the complicated posing ideas at home.
Tell me what you are worried about
Maybe your last session felt rushed. Maybe you dislike your smile in photos, or you always feel as though you look stiff. Tell me before we start.
Knowing what bothers you helps me guide the session. We can also talk about where the photos will appear and the impression you want to give. A warm, approachable photo for your counseling practice may call for a different expression than a portrait for a formal leadership announcement.
There is room for your personality in both.
Comfortable clothes make a difference
Choose something that fits comfortably and feels like you on a good workday. If you are constantly pulling at the neckline or adjusting a jacket, it is harder to settle into the session.
Try your outfit on sitting down as well as standing up. Check that it still feels comfortable when you move. If you are unsure between options, we can discuss them before your session. You will also receive preparation tips so you know what to expect.
A natural expression needs a little breathing room
Holding a smile while someone says “just relax” is not especially relaxing. I prefer to keep talking, give you clear direction, and let your expression change. There may be a few awkward jokes involved. You have been warned! haha
You do not have to smile in every photo. We can work towards an expression that feels right for you, whether that is a big smile or something a little quieter.
Come as you are
My studio is in Sunalta at 1801 10 Ave SW, with free street parking available outside. If the idea of booking has been sitting on your to-do list because you dread being photographed, let’s talk about it.
Get in touch about your headshot session and tell me what makes you nervous. You do not have to figure it all out first. That is what I’m here for!
